Deer Island is granted to Boston.

[1636, 1637] The island is located just off shore from today’s Town of Winthrop. It receives its name, according to William Wood, “because of the Deare which often swimme thither from the Maine, when they are chased by the Woolves.” Tree cutting is prohibited in 1655, and the island is purchased by Sir Thomas Temple in 1662. The island is used as a detention site for Native Americans in 1675,* and formally purchased from a Native American sachem in 16857.*
